L’autre chant de la danse – Béjart Ballet Lausanne

A new creation by Yuka Oishi for the BBL

Four years after imagining 空Ku for and with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Japanese choreographer Yuka Oishi returns to the company to compose The Other Song of Dance, a creation inspired by her reading of Maurice Béjart's eponymous book.

In this book, published in 1974 and borrowing its title from Nietzsche, the creator of the BBL reveals for the first time "the meaning and the secret of his experience and his quest, the years of hard work during which he painfully built the body he needed to dance, that is to say, to be, as Le Monde wrote at the time".

My encounter with Maurice Béjart's book allowed me to dance with his dreams and imagination," says Yuka Oishi. I read it while intuitively imagining some dances. He reports that his dreams became frequent around the time he began working on Mahler's Symphony No. 3. Even though the ballet doesn't really have the form of the music and the book, they were both an inspiration. I wanted it to be reflected both by the dancers and also introspective. In order to express this work in the form of a living language, I tried to graciously adapt to the sensations and feelings I could perceive from the dancers' bodies."
